"Hilda is great. She knows her birds and her calls. She moves at a different pace than the typical guide, working deliberate and meticulous to get your target birds. During our outing I was able to pick up a dozen lifers including the PR Lizard Cuckoo, Oriole, and Tanager. In addition, Hilda put me on a spot to get the PR Screech Owl the following day."

Hilda and co. were attentive, patient and helpful as
I/we tried to piece together a few random
attendees of the recent Am. Ornithology
Convention in PR. Due to covid restrictions we
had to rent a car to meet and shadow her at El
Junque to tour the upper part (where her permits
and familiarity were key). She has keen ears and
eyes, and a fun, outgoing personality. Birding was
a bit slow due to season and weather, but we
eventually saw our numerous endemic targets
quite well. Thanks!!!

The search for El Mucarito was quite a success.
We had three calling birds (at least) around us. At
first, with her better ears, Hilda was hearing birds I
couldn't hear, but they moved around a bit, and as
my ears adjusted, I realized that I was hearing the
trill of a screech owl...that is, until they broke out in
their calls, very nearly and a bit maniacal.
Definitely different from any owl in the eastern
USA.
Thanks Hilda.
