CAMP MUCARITO
|
On October 1, 2014, we started Proyecto Mucarito (PM), an environmental program of the
Puerto Rican Association of Interpretation and Education, Inc. (APIE) as part of our corporate
social responsibility.
Through Proyecto Mucarito we will be training teachers of both the public and private education
systems in order for them to learn about the birds in their schools and neighborhood. We
already published the first of a series of posters for their classroom.
We also signed a collaborative agreement with Para La Naturaleza, an unit from the Puerto Rico
Conservation Trust. Once a year, Proyecto Mucarito will also be available for a shorter training
at their facilities. As part of this agreement, we will be in charge on the monthly bird count at
Medio Mundo, Daguao, and Los Machos Wetland. This also applies for the Christmas Bird
Count.
Starting this Summer (2018), CAMP Mucarito will be available for anyone over 12 years old who
want to learn about birds, how to identify them through hearing. We will using a workbook that
is part of our new book The ABC of the Birds of the Archipelago of Puerto Rico: A practical
guide for bird identification.
An Annual Fund has been established. For each birding trip, $1 per person will be donated to
this fund that will be granted after evaluating proposals from students of the region (Ceiba,
Naguabo, Fajardo, Luquillo, Río Grande, Vieques and Culebra) for research on the Puerto Rican
Yellow-shouldered Blackbird.
Interpretation trainings and photography workshops will be available in the area; residents of
the above mentioned towns will receive a discount.
Starting September, 2018, the Internship Program will be available for tourism students.

As part of AdvenTours PUERTO RICO corporate social responsibility in 2002 we founded APIE, the Puerto Rican Association of Interpretation and Education, Inc.
APIE is a non-profit organization that offers training and continuing education for tour guides, plus a series of activities for the general public, focusing on children, students, and educators (Proyecto Mucarito).
In 2014 we created an Annual Fund to promote scientific research on birds, $1 of every tour we offer is added to this fund.
|
In September, 2014, AdvenTours PUERTO RICO signed a five years contract with the
Government which allows us to offer birding trips at the old Naval Station at Roosevelt Roads
in Ceiba. An educational component was included as part of our proposal. An annual fund

ADVENTOURS has been heavily involved in building professional
associations (tour guides and tour operators), a policy that has led to
the future implementation of guidelines for tour guides and tour
operators through the Best Practices Committee of the Puerto Rican
Association of Interpretation and Education, Inc. (APIE). In October,
2007, Occupational Standards for Outdoor Nature Guides and
Outdoor Adventure Kayak Guides where developed for the first time.
As part of our corporate social responsibility we founded the Puerto Rican
Association of Interpretation and Education, Inc. (Asociación Puertorriqueña de
Interpretación y Educación, Inc. APIE). APIE is a non-profit organization that not
only offer training and continuing education for tour guides, but also offers a
series of activities for the general public, focusing on children, students, and
educators (Proyecto Mucarito).
In 2014 we created an Annual Fund of which $1 of every tour is added to this
fund.
As part of our commitment with the region and El Yunque National Forest, from day one, we joined Forest Service staff and the citizen´s collaborative group who worked together with Forest staff in the revision of the new management plan of the Forest.
|
Since 2000 we have been volunteers of the Xmas Bird Count at El Yunque National Forest. In 2012 the Puerto Rican Association of Interpretation & Education (APIE) hosted two workshops (Interpretive Tour Guide Certification) at El Yunque. For the past three years, APIE has been active as a volunteer of Fundación Amigos de El Yunque celebration of the International Forest Day. In 2018 we will be offering talks, kid´s activities, and teacher´s training at the new El Portalito Hub as part of the Caribbean Bird Festival (April 22 - May 22).
