HIKING TIPS - PLANNING YOUR TRIP

  1. Plan ahead and surf the net for information about EYNF trail system.
  2. Know your capabilities.  The trail system consists of different levels of hiking expertise
    and effort.  Don´t attempt difficult trails if your are not at your best strength and physical.
  3. Check with the National Weather Service for the latest news on weather conditions,
    (787) 253-0840.
  4. Whenever you can, hike with a partner.  If you must go solo, inform your plans to others.
HIKING TIPS - WHAT TO BRING

  1. Plenty of water, lightweight fruits and snacks
  2. Comfortable hiking shoes with rubber soles due to slippery and moist conditions.
  3. Hat and sunscreen.
  4. Raincoat if your are climbing up to the peaks.
  5. First aid kit.
  6. Small flashlight.
  7. Camera.
  8. Watch.
  9. Binoculars.
  10. Walking/Trekking poles.
HIKING TIPS - UPON ARRIVAL

  1. At this moment, there is no charge to visit EYNF unless you stop at the Visitors Center.
  2. Observe and follow posted signs.
  3. Gate at Km. 8.0 is closed from 6:00 PM to 7:30 AM.
  4. Park at designated areas only.
  5. You can download a map of the recreational areas from EYNF website, if not, ask for a
    free map at the Visitors Center.
  6. Ask Forest Service personnel if you have doubts on which trail or trails you should hike.
HIKING TIPS - ON THE TRAIL

  1. Be aware of remaining daylight hours so you don´t get caught in
    the dark.  Make sure that you have enough time to hike selected
    trail(s).
  2. Respect Nature and fellow hikers.
  3. Respect other people right to enjoy Nature sounds, please avoid
    noise and keep volume of your personal music equipment to a
    minimum.
  4. Observe and follow trail interpretive signs and markings which
    are color codified.
  5. Children must be with an adult at all times.
HIKING TIPS - A FEW DO NOT´S

  1. NO DOT leave the trails to avoid becoming lost.
  2. Most cellular phones have signal only at the Visitors Center; turn it off to avoid using
    the battery.  If you are lost and your cell phone has a location device, save your battery
    so that rescuers can track you.
  3. Do not leave litter on the trails, follow Leave No Trace Principles.
  4. Do not pick plants or flowers.
  5. Do not disturb animals.
  6. Please be aware that insect repellent and skin lotion can be harmful to aquatic fauna.
  7. Smoke only in designated areas, if any.
