A 45 minute early morning drive takes us to the small mountainous town of Maricao, where most of the Taínos settled after the 1511 rebellion. Maricao is also home of the Coffee Harvest Festival. A one hour moderate to challenging effort hiking trail will take us to Salto Curet. The hike includes crossing the river twice and finally walk along the shore or through the river to reach the waterfall. Swimming at the waterfall is not allowed for safety reasons. A short stop at a local bakery will give you the opportunity to buy coffee from Maricao. If the tour is offered Thursday thru Sunday, we will include a stop a Los VIveros (Fish Hatchery). Don´t forget your binoculars; excellent alternative for bird watcherss

Located in the Southwest corner of Puerto Rico, the salt flats not only are one of the most important points for migrating shorebirds in the Eastern Caribbean, but it is also important in Cabo Rojo´s economic development through history, and a prime fish habitat. In 1999 the salt flats became part of the US Fish and Wildlife Service system. Legends and tales of pirates, a combat between two towns to have the control of the salt production, an old lighthouse built by the Spaniards, unique fauna and flora, are only part of what you will learn during this imaginary journey through time and space.
Our wildlife observation hike takes place in uneven terrain. The tour includes a visit to Los Morrillos Lighthouse and Boquerón Town. We will stop for cold glass of natural juice at a local small business. Excellent area for migratory species during the Winter, don´t forget your camera and binoculars. Optional lunch at La Marea Restaurant (not included in price).

Bordering the Caribbean Sea, Guánica State Forest, located in the southwestern region, is considered the best preserved subtropical dry forest on Earth. It was designated as a forest reserve in 1919 and as a United Nations Biosphere Reserve in 1981 because of its biological biodiversity. This dry forest exists due to the dry orographic rain of the Central Mountain Range (Cordillera Central). Three type of forests are found in this Forest: deciduous, semi-evergreen, and scrub forests. Guánica Forest is considered a paradise for birdwatchers, home of the Puerto Rican Nightjar.
Although this tour takes you through the three ecosystems found in the Forest, our nature hike takes place in the deciduous forest (uneven terrain) where many of the rocks and cobbles contain well-preserved coral fossils. Dry season: December thru April Wet season: August thru November
