It was the year of 1493 when Christopher Columbus
landed in the west coast of the Island of Borikén. The
territory of Borikén was inhabited by the Taínos.
It was also through the west coast that Ponce de León
arrived fifteen years later to start the colonization of the
new territory for Spain. But less than three years after
his arrival, the Taíno started their rebellion against the
Spaniards.
Almost four hundred years later, the territory was given
to the United States after the Hispanoamerican War of
1898.
It has been through the west that Puerto Rico´s most
important events in five centuries have taken place.
