WHAT IS A CORAL REEF?

Coral reefs are constructed by living
plants and animals, primarily corals
that surround their small
anemone-like tentacles in a hard
skeleton that forms much of the reef
structure.

They generally occur in clear,
tropical or semi-tropical seas to a
depth of approximately 100 meters
(328 feet). Coral reefs fringe
approximately one sixth of the
world's coastlines and are the
biologically richest of all
shallow-water marine ecosystems.

They support as many as 1 million
species of animals and plants, but
only a small fraction have been
described. Among the best known
groups are at least 5,000 species of
fish, over 10,000 species of mollusk
and more than 800 species of
reef-building corals. Approximately
30 percent of marine fish species
occur on coral reefs.

WHY ARE CORAL REEFS
IMPORTANT?

Connect your heart, soul and senses with Nature.  Join Hilda, Certified
Interpretive Master Tour Guide and Trainer, through a unique journey to
El
Yunque National Forest and Laguna Grande
.

Water was an important resource for the Taínos, the indigenous people
living in Borikén when the Spaniards arrived in 1493.  Water is still an
important resource and el Yunque National Forest has the highest
quality waters in our territory.
It all started with a drop of water.

This private adventure includes a moderate effort hike in the less
visited side of El Yunque during daylight, where you can swim in a
secluded river.

We will stop for light dinner (creole cuisine) at the Luquillo kioskos and
then will drive to Fajardo where you will start a sunset kayak adventure
at Laguna Grande, an adventure not to be missed while in Puerto Rico!
Join this fully guided night trip into one of the most amazing natural
phenomenons of the world! Paddle your way into a mangrove archway
canal leading to “Laguna Grande.” There, you will meet our glowing
friends, the Pyrodinium Bahamense, a microscopic plankton capable of
producing natural light when disturbed!

Due to the number of people visiting El Yunque National Forest during the Holy Week/Weekend (Wednesday through Sunday, including Good
Friday and Easter) and the
month of July (we have four holidays, July 4, July 17, July 25, and July 27), we DO NOT OFFER tours to El Yunque
other than the Night Hike and/or Taíno Ceremony.  Access to the Forest is limited and we cannot guarantee the quality on those days.
