Fifteen years after the Spaniards
landed in Borikén, Juan Ponce de León
arrived through the town of Guánica to
conquer the Island of San Juan
Bautista. The population was slowly
growing out of the limits of San Juan,
as most of the economical and social
development took place at the capital
city.  To protect the city, they built a
defense system.  

As part of the
Old San Juan Series,
thematic historical walking and
ecotours are available.  These tours
can be combined with a visit to the
Caparra Ruins, first city founded by
the Spaniards.
