As part of our corporate social responsibility, in 2002 we founded the Puerto Rican
Association of Interpretation and Education, Inc. (known locally as APIE), a non-
profitable organization. Through APIE and its volunteers, we coordinate several
conservation through birding activities, such as:

- Endemic Bird of Puerto Rico Bird Festival at the Maricao State Forest (first
Sunday of May, as part of the Caribbean Endemic Bird Festival) - National Trails Day (first Sunday of June)
- Mayagüez Christmas Bird Count (December)
- Maricao Christmas BIrd Count (December)
- Vieques Island Christmas Bird Count (January)

| Migratory birds Many birds, especially those that migrate, can use the "Earth's magnetic field to stay their course during long flights. Scientists still aren't sure how they do it, but one recent study suggests birds might have a form of synesthesia that lets them "see" the planet's magnetic lines as patterns of color or light that is overlaid on their visual surroundings. Humans must rely on familiar landmarks or the sun's position to locate North, and many can't even manage that. Maricao and Vieques bird counts take place on Important Birds Areas (IBA) as designated by
BirdLife International. We invite you to join us as volunteers. This year we will be promoting a
birding package on December that will include Maricao State Forest Xmas Bird Count.
