Adventure jaunts in Puerto Rico aim to leave “barely there” footprints.

It is h-o-t down here, yet now’s the time to visit. It’s low season, so hotels are eager and rates are
reasonable. That sparkling shoreline you see from your hotel room is actually just a few feet away.
No passport? Your clients don’t need one to come to Puerto Rico. As for adventure options, they’
re on a fast rise and aiming to make the island the next hotspot.
There’s something about Puerto Rico’s mountain-sea-sky combo that unleashes the adventurer in
even the doughiest of couch potatoes. On any given day, you may hang ten on roaring waves, kite-
surf over sunny beaches or canyon into little-known forested areas. Once the stuff of brave souls
who dared to walk into the wild with little more than a rope and a flashlight, adventure tourism is
finding a comfy niche from coast to coast.

“Our diversity of adventure options—hiking, spelunking, river rafting, kayaking, and more—makes
Puerto Rico an ideal location for the entire family,” says Puerto Rico Hotel & Tourism Association
Executive Director & CEO Clarisa Jimenez. “We have many outfitters that offer a wide variety of
very safe excursions for all levels of difficulty.” She adds that Puerto Rico’s expansive list of hotels
is well-equipped to handle requests with preferred adventure operators. Additionally, this surge in
adventure tourism is progressing hand-in-hand with the continuation of sustainable tourism and
green travel, which makes for a win-win option for both Puerto Rico and its visitors.

Hilda Morales, owner of AdvenTours, attests to a surge of adventure tourism—both soft and hard—
in Puerto Rico that wants to tread lightly as it keeps growing. The company prides itself on
following “Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics” principles, well-trained guides that are familiar
to the geographic area they’re showing and both eco- and culturally sensitive tours. AdvenTours’
clients will not suffer through mass throngs or gargantuan tour buses. According to Morales,
almost all of its excursions are custom-designed so that today’s savvy and well-researched
travelers are fulfilled. Additionally, AdvenTours is happy to suggest area hotels that are
geographically feasible with the adventure type your clients want to experience.

Three Island Favorites

Traveling east from San Juan, you reach the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest
System: El Yunque, the 28,000-acre home of 240 species of trees, 50 species of native orchids,
around 35 species of migratory birds…and the list goes on. Morales says one of her clients’
preferred excursions is a “hybrid” hike in El Yunque, which combines daytime exploration with
nighttime enjoyment of this outstanding tropical ecosystem: stepping into the great unknown with
a small flashlight pointing at the ground so as not to startle the “locals” and the sounds of the
forest guiding every step. During the day, visitors may dip their toes in one of the forest’s waterfall-
fed pools.

Not far is the town of Fajardo, the boating capital of the island, where watersports facilities and
charters offer snorkeling and scuba diving outings to offshore cays, as well as nighttime kayaking
along a bioluminescent lagoon. In fact, another popular alternative for AdvenTours’ clients is day or
night kayaking, available off the eastern towns of Fajardo and Luquillo and
Porta del Sol’s La
Parguera and Cabo Rojo. Those in better shape can inquire about “
kayabiking,” an exclusive
AdvenTours product that combines kayaking and biking adventures and thus provides different
perspectives on natural surroundings.

A third choice for the wilder at heart: caving. Aventuras Tierra Adentro offers excursions into the
Rio Camuy Cave Park, one of the largest river cave systems in the western hemisphere. Your
clients may rappel 250 ft. into the mouth of a cave and witness unique formations and fossils that
are millions of years old. This is a full adrenaline-pumping adventure, so good physical condition is
imperative! Both companies custom-design tours to clients’ needs, so rates vary accordingly.
