An "island" of contrasts
With only 111 mi x 39 mi, the Archipelago of Puerto Rico consists of three
physiographic regions: the karst belt, the mountainous area, and discontinuous
coastal plains [Monroe, 1976]. As small as our national territory could be, we
have a well developed system of caves and underground rivers, a tropical rain
forest, the best subtropical dry forest on Earth, mangroves, estuaries, and much
more.
